*****FIRECREEK GOLF COURSE*****
Joe Blankenship
Created in November 1992, this course is set in the Snake River Gorge area
of Idaho in the Western United States. It's a par 72 that plays approx.
6900 yards. This edition of Firecreek is an update of a course that I
designed some time ago in JNUG. When I created the original design, I had
received a supplement to the Dallas Morning News (Golf in Texas section)
and recreated their list of the 18 toughest holes in Texas. I had played
5 of the course represented and tried to make the most difficult course
that I could in JNUG and did. There was water on almost every hole and
400+ yard par 4's and a couple 600+ yard par 5's. All the par 3's in that
edition were in the 200+ yard category. That edition (JNUG) was in
excess of 7600 yards, as I recall, and would have been very unplayable
with the JNSE program.
This edition of Firecreek which I'll call Firecreek 94 has been changed
considerably over the months since I first released it. I've tweaked,
I'm sure, every hole at one time or another since I've been playing
around with the course (off and on) since it's release. Some holes have
minor changes, but the basic course is still the same. Some holes were
tighten up with objects and deep rough, while others were opened up with
the use of more landing areas, etc. I also played around a bit with the
palette in order to make the course look a bit more volcanic (after seeing
Bob Polin's Lava Island course).
I've made some amount of changes to some of the greens as well in this
edition. A couple greens were "dug up" entirely and re configured to better
(IMHO) fit the hole. I've smoothed out some greens and others have been
given a slightly more contoured texture. Again, this was done to make
those particular holes play more to the way I thought they should play.
There are also four (4) other PRC files included with the course so that
you can change the seasons as you desire. There's a FCREEK94.SPG which
gives a spring time glow to the course. There's also a Winter (.WIN),
Summer (.SUM), and Fall (.FAL) PRC files that can be renamed to
FCREEK94.PRC in order to change the appearance of the course. Just don't
forget to renamed the original PRC file first in case you don't like the
other PRC files. One note here: The winter edition still has foliage on
some trees that should be bare, but the method I used to create the
seasonal effect prohibited me from making these changes.
I also softened the background by utilizing one of the tools found in
Deluxe Paint II. I thought that gave the course a more finished look,
but I'm not the artist that some other designers are, even though I'm
kinda proud of my effort. I feel my expertise lies more in hole layouts
and routings (at least I enjoy that more than creating backgrounds and
objects).
In the first released edition, I took the basic holes and made some
yardage changes from the original JNUG version, removed most of the water,
and remade the course to look like the Idaho area in which it's located.
There was, in the distant past, a lot of volcanic activity in this part of
the country, so you'll find quite a lot of rocks and sage and other scrub
brush vegetation.
This version has my first original background in it. All the other designs
that I've made have utilized borrowed backgrounds (some modified) from other
designers. The objects used on Firecreek were borrowed primarily from Mark
Willett's various courses and Lee Ritze's St Andrews course although they
were all modified to fit the area in which this course is located.
I want to thank Mike Burdulis (Giz), Ron Enfield, Craig Clemans, and Randy
Barr for doing the play testing on the original Firecreek and for the hints
and suggested changes they made.
I hope you have many enjoyable rounds of golf on this course and will respond
with your comments about it. If you do like it and would like to get other
courses that I've designed, you can reach me through Prodigy (DFBG71A) or
on National Videotex Network (NVN) address of JBLANKENSH or by writing to me
at: P O Box 16521; Memphis, TN 38186.
